Lessons Learned at the Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium.
It was my first time taking my scooter to the zoo. I had been to the HyVee store, and Walmart with it. It was so freeing scooting down the aisles. We had decided to take my scooter and Bill would rent a scooter at the zoo, because of his bad knees. Our daughter was physically fit and could keep up with us. Zoo personnel had told us where not to go; where people were known to have become stuck in some low lying areas. We were enjoying taking the scooter down the concrete paths. We did a great deal of reminiscing as to how the zoo had changed over the years. We were nearing the elephants and had just seen the giraffes when my scooter stopped! The battery was dead!
Zoo Visitors to the Rescue
Some people stopped and said to find some zoo personnel and they would help us. We didn’t see any zoo keepers. So Bill told me to take his scooter and he would help our daughter push the scooter to our van. Luckily we were at the end of the zoo and the parking lot wasn’t too far away. I was to take the rental scooter back to return it. A zoo keeper saw me coming and saaid he would return the scooter to the Rental Service. He had me sit on a bench and he told me to wait and he’d take care of returning the rental and be back to help me. He told me how this had happened before. The zoo had heavy duty batteries in their scooters because the hills ran batteries down fast so now anytime we take the scooter somewhere it gets a full charge. Lesson learned! The zoo keeper came back to me with a small truck and he took me to where our daughter and her dad had just finished loading the scooter. We still had a nice day at the zoo and learned a valuable lesson! Charge that battery!
My advice is to Google Henry Doorly Zoo for current prices for admittance and go early if you want to rent a scooter! We were told they rent out early and it is first come first served! Have fun! But if you bring your own scooter give it a full battery charge!
