The Macy, Nebraska Indian Pow Wow. My grandparents had been going to Macy for years. They had made many friends. The native Americans called them Picture Man and Picture Woman.Photo credits go to my grandfather, Otto Wilson. My grandma was an Indian welfare agent for the Women’s Club. This was back in the 1930’s. This was before colored film was available. Grandma would tint the
Black and white photos grandpa took and developed and printed in their basement. He won many contest for his photos. He even had an exhibit of the Native American photos over in Europe. The 1944 flood hit Waterloo. It was a once in 100 years event. It was devastating. My dad often talked about it and rescues they made. My grandparents home was built up above ground level on a mound of soil. When grandpa’s photos returned from Europe they were put in a closet in the front bedroom on the main floor. It was the only photographs that were saved when flood waters poured in the basement windows. He had to throw out photos of Franklin Delanore Roosevelt he had taken when the President came to visit the Summick farm in Waterloo. He only had one photo of that event that survived. Many people who he took photos for let grandpa copy his originals The flood was one of the worst until recent times in 2019. If you ever have a chance to attend a POW Wow be sure to go. It is an event you will never forget.
